Launchpad + Raspberry Pi

January 20th, 2013 3 comments

Hi there. I got Novation Launchpad connected with the Raspberry Pi running the Raspbian installation and talking with Pure Data.

I wanted to be able to load PD patches on the Pi, let it run under the hood of the launchpad and output custom midi.

These were the steps I took:

1. Installed raspbian on the sd card and got the pi booted up. If you are having trouble check out the Raspbian FAQ

2. Got PureData installed and got PD talking with alsa.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install puredata

3. Got dependancies and configured the launchpad executable driver “launchpadd” on the pi.

$ sudo apt-get install libusb-1.0-0-dev
$ sudo apt-get install automake

$ autoreconf -i
$ ./configure
$ make install

4. Installed other drivers for other perferials, I used the MidiSport Uno usb midi cable.

5. Loaded up my PD skeches on the Raspberry Pi and started them up.

6. To have the Launchpadd executable run at startup I changed the /.profile file in linux to start the “launchpadd” program at login.

Some of the things I would like to do to finish this project is to build an awsome enclosure to hold the pi and the launchpad also use the gpio pins for midi instead of the usb to midi converter.

I’m using a sketch that changes the output channel of the LP with the top row of buttons. its like having 8x launchpads.

Here’s a zip including all the readme files, launchpadd driver and a pd sketch to test the functionality of the launchpad. launchberrypi_files.zip

also here’s a link to get pd-extended running on the pi PD_extended_on_RaspberryPi

Link of the Month – Lots of Drums

March 10th, 2011 No comments

I have been getting a lot of emails about that Ensoniq ASR-X sample library I talked about making a while back.  I started doing the tedious task of cutting and bouncing each sample, when one of the other producers I work with sent me this link.

http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127743

 Now I don’t know who this Ste_clectic person, but many thank yous are in order.  This is by no means excuse for why I have not finished my ASR-X library, but hopefully this will tide you all over until I can finish it up.  So as usual enjoy, have some fun, and make music.

Oh and here is another link to download the library, if ever the link in the forum stops working.

Casio CA100 Sound Library 2

July 20th, 2010 2 comments

I went back in and spent a good long time glitching my Casio CA100 again to provide you guys with another glitch library. I am very pleased with the variety of sounds from this machine. I recorded them in pro-tools at 24b 44100khz as mono wav files. there is 106 samples, as of now it is my largest circuit bent library.

TR-606 Sample Pack

July 12th, 2010 6 comments

Recently I found an old Roland TR-606 drum machine at a local music swap meet.  The previous owner thought the 606 was broken because it would not save his presets,  after some bartering he sells the drum machine to me for a ridiculous price.  Once I got 606 home I find out everything is fine with the unit and it is able to save my presets fine,  although the master volume pot was a little scratchy and at some point in time the batteries leaked inside the unit.  Anyways here is my sample pack of the TR-606.  In this library I sample the drum machine in two ways.  The first is directly into  ProTools recorded at 44.1 16-bit.  The second is sampled into my MPC2000XL and then into ProTools.  I hope you all enjoy, this is a fun little drum machine with some cool sounds.

Polyphonic Random Intervals

March 7th, 2010 2 comments

This is a program I created that allows you to add some randomization to what you play. It waits for a MIDI message in, then alters that note up a perfect 3rd, a perfect 5th, a perfect 7th, or an octave, also it is velocity sensitive and is polyphonic! I wanted to add more controls but as they say “keep it simple, stupid!” I planed on adding the other intervals but wanted to share what I have with the world! Shoot me an e-mail with any suggestions, and I will be more than happy to add them to the program. Watch for updates and new versions.

Download PRI nanoKEY edition for windows

Updates coming soon!
– More Intervals: minor 2nd, major 2nd…. diminished… (As of now, it supports perfect intervals.)
– Color coordination for diminished/augmented/major/minor/perfect inversions
– Negative inversions: octave down…. perfect 5th down… etc. (Currently, it adds value to the note you are playing.)

PRI nanoKey edition allows you to turn on/off the three middle controls with the pitch down, pitch up and mod buttons on your nanoKEY controller
keys

Listen to “C,D#,G#” a quick song I made with the PRI pressing only three notes C, D# and G# making the Cm chord. I recorded some loops in Abelton and threw on a beat. I had the “octave” and “5th” settings activated during this song, there are 4 different MIDI loops. Enjoy

8 band graphic EQ for the Launchpad

February 17th, 2010 3 comments

I thought it would be cool to have a graphic eq display on the launchpad so I built this 8 band graphic EQ. As of now, it has these controls:

1. Adjustable peak filters on each band
2. Individual band volume controls for those unruly frequencies

Download 8BandEQ2.0 for the Novation Launchpad for (Windows).

(forgive the cheap webcam framerate, it actually preforms better then this video can reproduce)

This is version 2.0. I will continue to update and add more features. I hope you enjoy 8bandGraphicEQ for the Launchpad.

The Octavizer

February 11th, 2010 No comments

Check out The Octavizer for the launchpad. Using the row of circular buttons across the top, The Octavizer lets you change the octaves of the rows of square buttons. All the chromatic note mapping stays the same it just changes octaves so it is compatible with Chords2.0. Enjoy
